The Riegl RiCopter is an Unmanned Aerial System

equipped with the Riegl VUX-SYS, a complete miniaturized airborne laser scanning system. The VUX-SYS consists of a Riegl VUX-1UAV which is a lightweight and compact laser scanner that has survey-grade accuracy (5mm), an Applanix inertial measurement unit (IMU) which has an extremely high (200 Hz) and accurate (0.015° Roll/Pitch, 0.035° Heading) update rate for reporting velocity, pitch, roll, and yaw utilizing fiber optic technology, a survey-grade GPS/GLONASS receiver, two (2) fully integrated flight controllers (one primary and one backup), a camera on a gimbal that is mounted on the nose of the RiCopter providing a first-person view (FPV) with telemetry overlaid for monitoring in-flight activity and two fixed, down-looking Sony A6000 24.3-megapixel cameras providing high-resolution photographs that are utilized in processing for quality control and for colorizing the processed data set with the appropriate RGB values.

When configured with its full payload, this UAS weighs less than 55 pounds, has a flight endurance of greater than 30 minutes and the scanner has a maximum range of 550 meters.  The entire system with its integrated flight controllers has a range of approximately 4 kilometers.  For safety purposes, this UAS utilizes manual takeoff and landing procedures but all other components of flight are fully autonomous.  Full manual control can be regained at any time with a simple flip of a switch.
